First step in becoming a minimalist??

Recently I've been collecting (accumulating, hoarding even?) books about de-cluttering, minimalism and simplifying life. Sounds contradictory doesn't it? Especially when I've just been gathering them, not actually reading them! So after coming to the end of the Kennedy biography I'd been reading and while fishing around my kindle for my next read, I decided to pull these books out of my archive and make a start on reading them.

Sometimes things are all just a matter of timing aren't they? I managed to pick up just the right book, at just the right time, with just the right words in it that I just happened to be receptive to on the day. The words? "Find a style of minimalism that works for you."

Awesome! I reckon I can do that! If it doesn't involve me giving up my handbag collection or passing on the video games I love. If I don't have to get rid of all my kitchen appliances, just the ones I don't use (and haven't ever really used).

Maybe (no promises) it's even time to clean out the storage unit of all the boxes that have been following us from house to house since we moved to this country nearly 4 years ago. The stuff in those boxes is so vitally important to my well-being that I wouldn't have a clue what's in them!

I think the reason I haven't had the mental fortitude to deal to these boxes yet is due to my husbands threats to just "throw everything out" when I know there's some very precious things in there given to me by my father & grandmother - both of whom are dead now. Each time he makes those threats he sets back my "psyching myself up" by another bunch of months. I must remember to tell him that before I tell him that I think I'm just about ready to tackle it!

I'm actually looking forward to doing it. I have shelves and shelves of books that have been replaced with e-books. Two espresso makers (three if you include the one in a box in the storage shed) when I don't even like the coffee they produce. Cupboards and boxes of plates, glasses, cups and mugs. Some can go to charity, some can be given away to family and friends, but first we're having a yard sale! Try to recover some of the money we've spent in buying, shipping and storing this crap. I mean stuff!

I realise there'll be too much to do it in one break, but if I start with the garden shed, then make that the storage place for everything that doesn't get thrown out initially, until the yard sale, charity & giving away is done. And spend at least one day on it per break, then I should have it well and truly done, sorted, over with in time to call the packers in to pack everything that's left up to go to our new house due for completion around the end of February 2012. Hmmm, considering we're home every third week that gives me . . . three days. I do believe that plan needs a little revision!

It is however a start, I'll revise and hopefully come up with an improved plan that'll work out beautifully!!
